Re: Manju - karako with drum

Hi Alex, For me the two manju you posted are Tokyo work, rather than Osaka. They are much closer to Hojitsu than Dosho. That being said the second MCI example you posted looks much more Osaka. Perhaps some sort of evidence for a move and change in styles? The MCI examples, his earlier Dosho influenc...

Re: Favorite Finds of 2017

Difficult this year to choose a favourite so please pick one from the selection for me A hard choice, all good pieces with individual merit. I think maybe the Goat tops it for me. Congratulations Martyn that is certainly one of the finest Dutchmen I've seen. Hope you bring it along to one of our sh...

Re: Sage

Hi Curt, Mingei carving ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mingei ). We spoke about the movement in relation to our pottery interests on private messages. Don't take the wiki entry literally on the dates. Here on the forum we use the term in a wider sense. It's a folk carving (hobby work) that probably...

Re: Favorite Finds of 2017

This year I was kindly steered toward a netsuke high on my wish list, a nice old mama mermaid. This one, battered but happily swimming along and hugging her merbaby, was just the right one. Alison - this is a wonderful old honest piece. A nice patina to the wood. This is the first time I've seen on...

Re: Favorite Finds of 2017

Wow - hasn't everyone been having fun 2017! I had only one item I wished for at Tremont. I had a go - the bidding started making me dizzy - post auction I discovered that Neil had the same target set, and his pocket ran deeper than mine  I console myself that at least I can handle it at some po...

Re: Thank you for your trust and patience :-)

Actually this has come as a total surprise to me, mixed with not a small amount of concern. Are you really all right, and next to that, will we really be all right? I cannot imagine life here without you, Martyn, but you have helped launch, float and steady this aircraft carrier, so I guess we must...

Re: Anraku(sai) netsuke

Hi Curt, Here is an interesting example, signed Anraku. Note again the same specific stain we attribute to Anraku (click on image for larger view). canvas.png For any INS members, there is a thread some 7 pages long with examples of work, and discussions about this carver. There is also the full art...

Re: A little tiger

Hi Curt, Worth noting the tiger bottom right in this extract. Work of the first Hakuryu (and age noticeable even though a poor image); hakuryu_GL43863050.jpg Here is another example of Hakuryu I work; 00163618.jpg Here an example of work considered Hakuryu II (click on image for larger version).
