Re: Bonhams Wrangham online auction (sale number 25125)

Hi Matt - regarding netsuke it seems to be mainly Ivory being pushed through. It might be that Katchen was moved, the Wrangham 7 was brought forward? Probably the last Ivory sale we see from Bonham's here in the UK. This being said, it's not stacked with ivory pieces.

Re: Netsuke or Okimono?

One thing I wanted to ask you Martyn- you included that very informative .pdf of lacquer revival as an aside, rather than pointing to it as describing the methods of the painting on the pieces being discussed, right? Correct - the article is an informative and interesting wider view on lacquer revi...

Re: Netsuke or Okimono?

Martyn, I couldn't commit to a date for this piece. What features are you seeing that might push it into the 20th century? Hi Alan, The hue and colours of the paint. I've not seen this before late 19thc. Saishiki doesn't hold up well to 300 years either. IMO most Shuzan originals probably wouldn't ...

Re: Idenification of material

Alan - that is a powerful example. The features very well defined. Are the eyes inlaid gold - or rather lacquered gold? The left eye looks more like lacquer. But then again photo's can be tricky. Would need more photos at different angles for the top signature. Bokuzan would be closest to the signat...

Hi Snipes,

This is a much later model - in the style of Shuzan saishiki pieces. At a push I might even go early 20thC.

Reminds me of my daughter recently - on return from one of my business trips she was proud to show me she could put her toe up her nose! I was speechless.

Re: "Moidon and Kodama"

Hi Leon,

I picked this up at the contemporary event in May. It reminded me of something related to shinto with the shide's - now I understand it. Thanks for sharing :)

Re: My granddad Buddha netsuke

Hi Ran - a warm welcome to forum :) It does look to be a form of plastic to me. a quick way to identify a positive result on the material is to heat a pin over a flame and then press it into somewhere inside the himotoshi (bottom hole). If it sinks in to the material you've confirmed. Sounds like it...

I agree regarding it's likeness to Gigaku masks. Have a search for Suikoju (used in plays to depict a drunken foreigner) or even Chido (precursor to tengu) - you should find some masks that look very similar.
