Re: Bonhams "Fine Japanese Art" - 17th May 2018

Hi Jim - good to hear from you :) Yes I received mine as well today. Not sure about low estimates - seemed reasonably standard for the Bonham's Fine Art sales - what was more surprising was the number of mixed lots. Noticed quite a few pieces from David Bowden, who passed last year, and a friend of ...

Re: Euronetsuke Fest 2018: 11th - 13th May 2018

That's good John :) A little bird told me that everyones favourite cuddly rat has been a rather busy chappy, apparently touring other museums throughout UK without our approval ... lets hope he makes it home on time ! Don't be cruel to the guys Gopi - you know the rat's on Tour! I thought I'd also ...

Re: Spring 2018 Journals arrived

Yesterday I received my Euronetsuke journal :) (discovered it was nothing more than a wrong postcode). It was wonderful to read a profile on Adam Bland, a contemporary carver we are lucky enough to correspond with here on the forums. The article opens with a rather dashing photo of Adam in what I su...

Re: Our dear friend LUBlub

Dear Rosey, Thank you for letting the community know. This is very sad news for the forums members, and everyone that was touched by his charismatic spirit. He was a fighter until the end, and always cared deeply for the passion we all share in netsuke, and the INS society he supported. I would like...

Re: Is this a rakan or a Sennin?

Hi Walter, as Piers suggests, it would be useful if we can have some 360 images around the belt area? I've managed to acquire some closer images of the model shared in the article on the previous page of this thread. This model is from the same circle of hands, and it appears uncontroversial to sugg...

Re: Is this a rakan or a Sennin?

I presumed that is the object Piers was questioning Alan. It does look like a sword handle but surely not regulation kit for a Rakan......... Hi John, I held back posting because of the lack of any distinctive handle. As Rosey points out no obvious sword. Additionally, without we find the sword som...

Hi David. Thanks for sharing those images. Appears to be the very same piece as published in In a Nutshell. Good spot and great photos!

Re: Is this a rakan or a Sennin?

Hi Rosey, Thank you for taking the time to share your expertise on this subject. The quality of the okimono you have just shared is breathtaking. Moreover, the model subject is a perfect match. I scold myself for the sloppy approach in my opening reply. I should have taken the time to explain where ...

Re: Is this a rakan or a Sennin?

Dear friends, thanks for your warm welcome and expert opinions. In the meantime I myself did some further research and ended up by a very similar piece in the Bushell-collection: "familiar and unfamiliar netsuke", p. 104, nr. 84. Many thanks and best regards, Walter. Dear Walter - you see...

Re: Is this a rakan or a Sennin?

Hi and welcome to the forum Walter.

IMO this is neither rakan or sennin. In other similar examples some debate exists around the exact subject on whether it is kobo daishi, priest, monk, rakan or holy man. Sennin is definitely discounted.

It's Edo school work.
