Re: Advice on Purchase

If the non-invasive method is commercially available soon I will probably date it, for fun if nothing else. A couple of non-invasive methods are available. That is not the problem. The problem is margin of error in the result sets. Perhaps the plasma method is the least contaminated available, but ...

Re: An appealing netsuke

I promise details of the event will be published by the end of this month! This work appeals to me. In my photography hobby - I often am drawn to photograph these sorts of details. Especially pleasing aesthetic in old rusty metal and peeling paint combinations. The Med and Africa great for finding t...

Re: Advice on Purchase

Hi Greg, Nice to see a newcomer to the forum so full of enthusiasm :) The cow you acquired is what we term as school work. Tomotada was an 18thc carver. The cow you have looks to be late 19th. On carbon dating. A few of us have looked into this extensively. I would recommend that you just enjoy what...

Re: one of the first purchased

Hello Piers, Nice netsuke. I think you will find this is the " Chrysanthemum Boy Kikujido " he wrote Buddhist scripture on the leafs of chrysanthemums and floated them down the river. He lived in the wilderness, that is why he has a leaved cloak. Your netsuke has his brush in his right ha...

Re: one of the first purchased

Still hard to make out, but you have it in hand. Your observation in the 3D. I can make out two, rather than one, raised objects. So your flower heads probably the better suggestions :) always harder to observe images via a phone.

Re: Subject Quiz

Does anyone else see a bat, rather than a rat, emerging from the foot of this piece?
Screen Shot 2018-01-29 at 15.51.35.png

The artist seems very capable to display anatomically correct rats elsewhere (e.g. shoulder). It may just be the Angle of the photo. Jan do you have a side shot of the piece?

Re: one of the first purchased

An elegant sennin in that style Piers - Nice hunting. I especially like the facial and hair features on this one. Pleasing patina. Agree on your attribution. Can't quite make it out from photos, but might that be a reishi sceptre in his left hand? Sorry but I have no tips on cleaning it up. I don't ...

Re: Inro of silk brocade in tree

Nothing wrong with any of that, but I do not think anything is caught up in the tree, merely tied up in the middle. Under the cherry trees many a new love blossoms with the spring, Just reporting what I'm seeing regarding it entangled (looped) over the tree. Sorry Piers, screen shot pants. Out and ...
