Re: Dragon
Hi Raoux
It's a lovely carving of a dragon. How many hours did you spend on the carving?

Re: Favorite Finds of 2017
Hi all my netsuke affectionado friends Some fabulous netsuke on show so far. I particularly like Judy's ensamble and Alex's shishi and young. By far and away my best acquisition this year is this rather large shunga netsuke by Shunzan (Meiji Period) showing Fukusuke and Okame having a good time drin...

Your "son" with the shishi mask in front of him can also be found in the British Museum's collection and was exhibited in their last exhibition entitled "Netsuke- 100 minature masterpieces from Japan". What a find!!! Well done.

Re: Shunga discussion - different grades
Hi all my avid netsuke friends I acquired this netsuke at a UK provincial auction recently. It was described as "a lady and gentleman in a circular tub sharing a drink"! It is of course Okame and Hotei in a sake cup enjoying a cup of sake but look carefully and they seem to be enjoying som...

Re: RYO KAWAHARA-A LOST MASTERPIECE?
Thanks Luigi and Clive for your comments. Luigi The reason that Meinertzhagen and Neil Davey gave very little info on Ryo is because he is extremely rare- even the British Museum has no examples of his work- only 12/15 known examples throughout the World. If I was you I'd chase up on your snails. Cl...

Re: RYO KAWAHARA-A LOST MASTERPIECE?
Hi Martyn Thanks for getting back to me so soon. I look forward to meeting up with you when you get back from the German Convention. The height of my netsuke is 55mm. No, I have never handled another Ryo netsuke. The genius of this master carver was his ability to convey multiple emotions and attitu...

Re: RYO KAWAHARA-A LOST MASTERPIECE?
Hi Everyone Yes indeed, Jan has done a wonderful analysis of various parts of Ryo's carvings as compared to mine and has been quite complimentary. The problem is that none of you have the actual netsuke to hand so cannot comment on the"agi" the carving give off. I shall try to address this...
