Re: Favorite Finds of 2017

Maybe not my favorite find of 2017, but this was my last find prior to moving back to Arizona. Both the pipe holder (frog on bean pod) and tonkotsu (dragon in swirling clouds) are signed 'Biaraku' (I think). The nasu ojime is unsigned. Re: Another Shishi

Neil - thank you. Your posts in reply to my question, went beyond my expectations. You provide an absolute fountain of information. Not only do you share strong identifiable characteristics of this circle of hands, but you then go on to share a carvers name, and a reference from the Soken Kisho. On...

Re: Favorite Finds of 2017

I would suggest clouds or whiffs of smoke presented in a triskelion design. The question is: why on the reverse side of a door mouse? Based on the thick tail, I would think this is more of a squirrel than a door mouse.

A 'triskelion' such as the coat of arms of Fuessen.

You might end up taking an unwanted trip to North Korea.

Re: Tips for visiting Japan

Tip 1: Bring an umbrella and raincoat.
Tip 2: Visit the Kyoto Antique Fair (Oct. 27 thru 29).

If you want to see a somewhat off the beaten path place, try Kanazawa. Just be sure to stay away from the beaches at night.

Re: man examining wound on his leg

Very interesting. If the above example is in fact a 'fake' Miwa with a re-carved face and added signature, then the one I own could indeed be a more honest example of this theme by another Tokyo school carver or possibly someone else under the Miwa umbrella. I'm pretty sure there are more examples o...
