Re: Meet Netsuke! Exhibition (Mar 15th - May 15th, 2017)

Received my catalog for this Exhibition yesterday, and it is just terrific! Printed on durable paper, virtually all extremely well photographed, and in color, the pages are thick and glossy. The netsuke and Sagemonoya are mostly in that elusive category of 'netsuke I'll never be able to afford to ow...

Good article from NPR on Wash D.C. "Meet Netsuke" Exhibition, discussed in several threads here:

You can buy the catalog from this exhibition if you act very quickly as supplies are quite limited:

The catalogue for the current netsuke exhibit in DC can be obtained through the Japan-America Society, not the Japanese embassy:

Re: Manju - karako with drum

Alex, I REALLY like the carving on this one! - the musical theme is carried over to the solitary bachi (plectrum) on the reverse. - wonder if there is a hidden message, or some relationship between the drum and the bachi, the latter alone, without shamisen or other stringed instrument to play? - not...

Re: Netsuke exhibition in Washington, DC

Alison, thanks for sharing with us so many views of this most impressive exhibition!

I particularly like how the displays are arranged, with strategically placed mirrors, lighting, and optical magnifying aids.
Displaying netsuke and sagemono is never easy, but this one has a very nice feel.

Love, love, love the Shoki with Oni on his head and sword held in front!!! One of my favorites in the category of Netsuke That I Will Likely Never Own. You open an interesting door for analysis here, Vlad - Isolating the faces (some people do this when examining a figural piece by covering the piece...

Re: THE OFFICIAL 2017 INS COLOGNE CONVENTION/SYMPOSIUM THREAD

Thanks for this, Adrian - it will be of great navigational help for those unfamiliar with the area, for getting to Dusseldorf, and then on to Cologne by either train or cab. 8-)
