Re: Shokasai gold lacquer shibayama inro

Very interesting Alan and thanks for your comments. When you say ivory inlay was available on paper sheets, I assume you mean similar to the flowers and other small ivory pieces on the inro. Were coral and shell inlay also available in this manner and were there workshops with carvers churning out ...

Re: Van Ham - Wiedersehen mit einem Einhorn (A love letter to the Kirin)

I've thought it might be interesting to study a significant number of netsuke from this region of the tusk and use this radius of curvature to determine the original circumference of tusk. This could be charted against more recent tusk data to see if elephants were producing larger tusks in the pas...

Re: Van Ham - Wiedersehen mit einem Einhorn (A love letter to the Kirin)

I think this is becoming a tad confused.. it might be helpful to illustrate that while we might broadly refer to differences in the character and quality of cementum and dentine ivory.. it's really much more complicated when we consider how such structure and chemistry of each might affect their &qu...

Re: Van Ham - Wiedersehen mit einem Einhorn (A love letter to the Kirin)

Hi Gopi (borat), nice to hear from you. I hope you are well. An interesting question. Forgive me if I am being presumptuous but I think its fair to assume that when you ask the question, how would I date this Kirin? you are specifically focused on the date when the carver made the original carving w...

Re: Van Ham - Wiedersehen mit einem Einhorn (A love letter to the Kirin)

Clive- you beat me to this oft-repeated myth! :) Clive, Doug, would one of you be willing to debunk the myth with a technical explanation for our readership? Martyn.. since I have on many previously occasions provide this forum with detailed technical explanations that comprehensively debunk the bl...

Re: Van Ham - Wiedersehen mit einem Einhorn (A love letter to the Kirin)

"The marked difference in color between the front and back proves it was worn a lot: the back - not being exposed to sunlight - has a wonderful iridescent and partly transparently shiny surface, while the much paler front was evidently exposed to the bleaching sun. " What a load of bollock...

Re: Bonsai Man

I wonder if it's time open to open up a debate on whether we use NLO too widely, and what it was originally coined for? I always thought the term utterly nonsensical and if I remember correctly was largely argued for because a few members really objected to words like "crap" being used to...

Re: Contemporary netsuke

And I'm more than happy to confuse you Clive. :D I still think it was worth the effort. You may not like it being called a netsuke, you might even be right about that. But for me it is. For now. For once. Let's not all make pieces like this in the future. Neither will I. Most of it is with respect ...
