Re: Signature reading

I am not sure what it actually is for any more, Judy. Netsuke, as most valuable collectibles, may be either arts or antique crafts. Art is a unique, newly developed either in form, or in composition creation aimed at effecting our emotional sphere, when crafts are high level and quality hand-made re...

Re: Signature reading

I chose my words fairly carefully in my reply above, Vlad, and I stand by them. We do not know if this person is a total beginner, or someone perhaps working for a museum who has been asked for a signature reading, regardless of subject matter or quality of carving. Sure Piers, and I do by mine. Th...

They appear to be glued from a few chunks of ivory each, Piers. Those must've been used to hold them together...

Re: Who is this homely character?

I never said "late 19th", and no Alan, I think this piece is much older and actually depicting a Chinese character based on the dress and the hair style (Kanzan and Zhitoku are often depicted in such), but depicting life scenes should've started somewhere... All I am saying, we do not need...

Re: Who is this homely character?

Not a sennin for sure, but possibly a vendor of something, or just a neighbor passing by. Live scenes became quite common in the 19th...

Only one downside - unlike regular museums, it is closed on weekends.
