Re: Subject Quiz

I wasn't aware of the slip/grip properties of 'Same', thinking it was just a pebbley surface but thinking back to the many sharks and rays I've caught and released it should have been obvious to me. Thanks, Piers.

Re: Subject Quiz

Piers, I was completely clueless on this one. It looks like a ray skin grip. Is ray skin still being used in Japan for any purposes?

Re: Advice on Purchase

How much mammoth ivory could there possibly be in the world? I would have thought less than 100 of those animals had ever been found but it sounds like they've found an incredible number of them if you can still get one for like 2K. I guess you can probably buy a whole mammoth for not much more. Th...

Great summary, Reinhardt. If I showed up there I'd end up on the right side horse for sure.

Re: Some light reading for the coffee break

I'm venturing way off track here but would add the exhibit is touring pretty widely and I would highly recommend it. After all, Genghis Khan conquered more of the world than anyone and the cross-cultural connections to many arts we love are important. There was even a live music and dance show lasti...

Re: Advice on Repair

Greg, I think Doug's advice to leave it alone is sound. If you think about the missing bow as a long skinny piece to replace (and maybe a string?) I think it would be challenging and somewhat expensive to have done. Likely more costly than you paid. If it is at your home in Italy ivory could be used...

Re: Some light reading for the coffee break

This one is for Chonchon, a lover of various sagemono. Yesterday we saw a special exhibit of Genghis Khan material and his successors. These flint and steel kits are very much like those found in Japan. 20180221_081327.jpg And some weapons from the 13th -14th 20180221_081255.jpg That's a primitive g...

Re: Ceramic netsuke

Alisin, I've also had rotated image problems when posting from my Android phone. Now for anything I want to post I rotate the image 90 degrees and save it in an incorrect orientation, then reopen and rotate it on around 270 degrees to look normal and save the new image. Using that one solves the pro...
