Re: A Horse with Rider

Not so much "the lack of detail" as it is the wrong detail. What do you think of the inscription? The unlikely jutting of the rider's bottom sticking into the air? The lack of age?Etc.

Re: A little stolen Fox

Curt, you are starting to see. It's a steep learning curve with netsuke but you've started that journey. Just looking at and compairing the heads on yours and Judy's example is a study in its itself.

Re: Sage

I think this is an authentic but coarsely carved piece in antler rather than bone.
May I suggest you give size info on pieces or put numbers on the scale used here?

Re: Favorite Finds of 2017

I know Alison has been working on a Journal article on Mermaids but didn't know she had acquired this fine uncommon example. Good pick!

Re: Favorite Finds of 2017

Peter, what a powerful anguished face on your sennin as if he is drawing on all his powers. But the posture of your Benkei keeps drawing me back.

Re: Favorite Finds of 2017

Well done, Allison! And happy Thanksgiving to you. Interesting information on the squirrel/grape subject from Piers. I like your netsuke Makka Pakka but the face of the squirrel with an obvious squirrel's tail and association with grapes is very rat-like for me. Is there some intended message being ...

Re: Favorite Finds of 2017

Neil, I love those pipe cases. The poor mortal trying to shelter under a lotus leaf with all hell breaking loose overhead is funny.

Re: Favorite Finds of 2017

We acquired this 18th Century tall (10.5cm) stag antler Seiobo on our first trip back to visit friends and attend the SF Chapter meeting after we move south about 350 miles. Sorry about photo orientation. I've messed with these images three times trying to get it right.

Re: Man with stick and a bird

If the hole the cord passes through is supposed to be the himotoshi it totally fails as a netsuke. It looks quite modern to me.
Please spend some time browsing the NLO area to see what not to buy and why and then move on to the forums here with some wonderful antique netsuke. :)
