Re: 2018 drawer

Alex, your life-like Masanao toad should be able to catch that worm! Great tiger too.

Re: Netsuke or Okimono

It would not be a suitable netsuke without himotoshi of any kind so it is simply a miniature carving probably dating to the period around WWII and later. I have no confidence the "signature" is that of a known artist.

Re: Father & son straining liquid

Good story John! I don't see any willow pattern on the clothing which would have made a more positive ID. Or willows could have been carved rising behind the young assistant. Still, your proposed identification sounds good.

Re: Working Figure

Good to see you on track with a nice antique piece, Henrik. But why do you mention the himotoshi? They seem appropriate but did you mean something further?

Re: Junishi

The second piece sure looks like a dancing fox. I like Pier's suggestion of shape-shifting. It also seems to be developing hands.

Great information, Piers, as always!
I love your word etymology and use of illustrative examples.

At that price I would rub my eyes and wonder why I could not see it might be a great fake...and quickly buy it.

Re: Proverb and Allusion

In spite of seeing the tower and spiraling clouds engraved on the clam, I just failed at connecting all the dots, Piers. Thanks once again for presenting an entertaining glimpse into old Japan.
