Definitely a modern copy, Christophe. And I am sure you yourself can make a much better one!

Christophe, the "signature" appears to be an attempt to write Mitsuhiro...  but it's not really even a good effort.  Same with the "seal", which reads left to right.

This would therefore, a copy of Mitsuhiro Ohara, born in Osaka (1810-1875)

I do not understand why the copyist would have done much work, I recall that the bird is moving!

I'm not sure that Mitsuhiro (1810-1875) ever carved the subject of a chick emerging from an egg, although he did carve a dragon emerging.  Even if he had carved the chick-egg subject, it would be overly generous to refer to one of these 20th century products as a "copy"...  the craftsmanship is utterly inferior to anything considered to be the work of the 19th century carver.

Pieces exactly like this are carved in dozens and sold on eBay every now and then. Apparently not that much work for some for the $50-100 they charge for it.

I seem to remember that one of the contemporary Russian carvers  recently carved a bird and egg. Or was it Cornel Schneider? I forget, but perhaps you know who it was, Vlad. If so, perhaps Christophe might be like to see a photo, just to compare the fine work in that with this crude carving.

Yes Freda, I think you are refering to the following works of Oleg Doroshrenko from Ukraine. The "Bird on a pear" is 52 mm (2 1/8") tall... Mammoth ivory, mother of pearl, gagat.

This wasn't what I was remembering, Vlad, but it's a fine carving:

I can't find the one I thought I saw (it's not by Schneider) and now wonder if I dreamed it!
