I thought prices in both were lower, with a few exceptions - there are alway that special few - than I expected. I didn't bid in either this time but instead decided to be a handicapper and make a bunch of projections, to see whether I really have an idea on these things.
Extremely low overall and congratulations to those who got the bargains!
if I knew the squirrel a/k/a dormouse with grapes would sell so cheaply, I would and should have bid on it.
Live and learn.
How did others feel about the prices?
Do we see any trends emerging or do we have to wait for London in Nov for that?

I did not bid either, but actually think the prices were overly reflective of quality with some deviations on both ends. Most of it was clearly post-Meiji stuff anyway. I was actually quite surprised with fairly high final prices of the ebony cockerel "signed Okatomo" and of the unsigned ivory diver with octopus, as signatures believed to be authentic have clearly driven the prices this time.

I did buy two lots at Bonham's and lost the Fujin to a dealer in the room. At $275 (plus tax/premium) I couldn't pass up the sneezer signed on an ivory plaque Hokei (plus 2 other 19th century authentic beginner's pieces for my son) which is pictured in a line drawing by F.M. in the MCI. I also got the buffalo horn namazu in a lot of 3 pieces that included a "fox hunter" ex-Behren's signed Issai (pretty low end but a good subject for a beginner to talk about when his friends inquire about those odd little carvings).

Congratulations Alan! Those were probably the best buys of that auction!

Alan, you did indeed do well!
And great that you are mentoring your young collector(s)!
Enjoy!

For a collector who is interested in a variety of legends/subjects and materials these sales present an opportunity to add some depth to a collection without breaking the bank. Collecting these doesn't keep one from also buying better pieces. My son liked the subject and feel of the worn antler Fukurokuju that was included with the sneezer, so he too it home with him Sunday evening (he's now living in the SF area so will get an education soon...wish he had been able to attend the session we had that afternoon with Gleeson and CalBear).
