" Yugaku mono consistently take place in a far-away land, which adds a fabulous flavour to these plays.
Source of this Noh is Taiheiki XXXVII, whose story -as that of the Konjakumonogatari V - can be traced back to Chinese and Indian sources.

A Rishi living near Benares (Noh: Country Harana) gets a son of a hind under peculiar circumstances. Although he has a human appearance there is a horn growing on its forehead, which is why the people call him “unicorn”. (Ekash-inga, jap. Ikkaku). Through exercise and practice he gains supernatural powers and becomes a Sennin.
One day, coming down from the mountains, he slips on the rain-slicked stones. Enraged by this incident, he magically captures the dragons of the country, the bringers of rain, and locks them up in a cave. From that moment on, rain stops falling and the country suffers from a terrible drought.
The Emperor gathers the wise and dignitary, asking for council on how to control the disaster. A clever Official advices the council to select the most beautiful palace lady from the three thousand that live there, and to send her to the hermitage of the Sennin to seduce him, which would make him lose his magical powers. The beautiful Shanta (Jap. Senta Taiheiki) is chosen and sent (Taiheiki, with five hundred beauties) to the hermitage of Ikkaku. And the mission succeeds. Ikkaku loses his magical powers and is no longer able to keep the dragons from erupting from the cave. The drought-stricken land gets rain in abundance, so indispensable for the cultivation of rice.

Short schematic structure of the play

I. The First Scene is near Benares (capital of Harana country). The hermitage (Tsukurimono), which is in the mountains near Benares is realised on the stage, but it is not shown at first.
An Official (Waki) in service of the Indian Emperor (Wakizure) enters the stage with two litter carriers and the beautiful Shanta. The hermitage is now the scene.

II. Ikkaku is heard singing from his hermitage (Shite); first dialogue with the Official. First Chorus (Age-uta). The Sennin opens the door of the hermitage and is now visible in all its peculiarity, with greenish hair flowing upwards and the antler on his forehead.

III The show now focuses on the beautiful Shanta. Ikkaku is looking at her attentively and praises her beauty. The official wards off, stating that it is not that special and that she is only lending a hand and bringing wine and fruits for refreshment after the long journey.
The Sennin supposes that his state of not growing old or dying is due to him living on pine needles, sipping dew from the cinnamon tree and dressing in moss garment. He does not drink wine.
But now that the guests invite him and the beautiful Shanta hands him the cup of wine, he is not able to resist and simply can not say no.
A joyful feast is starting. And Shanta is dancing (Gaku). Her dancing becomes more and more captivating. The hermit, attracted by her dance, gets up and joins her dance. There is play and dance in abundance and the cups of wine are filled again and again. Ikkaku Sennin is beguiled by Shanta. He is drunk, staggers, collapses and falls asleep. She has been able to seduce him. Shanta returns merrily all the way back to the capital with its officials.

V. Chorus: Roaring and turmoil in the cave, the sound of which is resounding through heaven and earth.
The hermit, now awake, hears it and rushes to the cave. Two little dragons are screaming. Ikkaku approaches them. But his wine-drinking has caused him to loose his Divine powers, a punishment from heaven. The mountain wind is howling wild, the sky filling with huge clouds, the cave is shaking and the rocks scatter. The Dragon King appears. Ikkaku grabs the sharp sword in wild excitement and fights the Dragon God who is wearing a golden armor. The jewelled blade pulled out, he fights for a while, but Ikkaku has lost his God-given power and gets weaker and weaker and falls. The Dragon God joyfully rises into the air, producing lightning and thunder, heaven and earth shudder, rain pouring down with overflowing water. Joined by the white waves he returns to the dragon palace. “

May be it is worth to give more detailed informations about Ikkaku Sennin. In my papers I keep the comlete text of the original play. But it is complicated and long, long, long. Probably too specialized for the general interest here.

However I have a desription of the content by the German Japanologist Hermann Bohner, who published a book about Noh plays in 1956 by the Deutsche Gesellschaft fuer Natur- und Voelkerkunde Ostasiens in Tokyo.

I could copy 2 and a half pages from this book. But I am not willing to do the translation in Engllsh by myself. I would offer the original text in German.
May be the moderators could transform it into English by using a computer program.

How about that? If you ask me to go ahead, I would do the "writing" tomorrow,

Reinhard

Patrizia Jirka-Schmitz writes :"The mask of Ikkoku sennin (lit. Single-Horn immortal) is easy to identify on account of its single small horn on the forehead and the oni-like physiognomy. (...)
